'I joined the Huddersfield canal society which covers the section from Ashton canal basin to Stalybridge through to Huddersfield. They had a trip boat, and I volunteered to be on the boat crew and every weekend I would run trips for people and help to raise funds for the canal restoration. I organised the crew rota for the boats for 25 years and I trained people up to become boat masters. '
