'Stalybridge Wakes. Stalybridge was a town of Cotton Mills and Engineering works mainly. In July the Mills closed to give the workforce 2 weeks holiday. During this time a travelling fair would arrive and set up rides and stalls behind the Market Hall. One of the stalls sold black peas and I remember my dad telling me that these peas were left to soak in the river before being cooked and sold to the public. How true this was I am not sure but many folk over the years have told exactly the same story given to them by their parents. '
