'At Stalybridge Wakes Week they used to sell black peas in the little tub, it was situated at the site of the river and people used to say they soaked the peas in the river/canal before cooking. I am not sure they really did but the peas tasted really nice, with a little salt on and plenty of vinegar. Hmm maybe that was just my dad so we wouldn’t buy as many. We never came to any harm and neither did dad and he ate plenty of them.'
