'The canal towpath is a natural calming route-way linking Stalybridge with the rural areas towards Mossley, Saddleworth and the hills beyond. It is used by ramblers, dog walkers and families going in to Stalybridge.
The towpath is also populated with cyclists but after wet weather they damage the towpath and make it very muddy. Thankfully alongside the canal there is a former railway line (the Mickelhurst Loop) which is wider, well drained and gives access to Stalybridge Country Park.'
