'Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s the restoration of the Huddersfield canal through Stalybridge really picked up pace, as we approached the millennium the good news was funding became available, enabling the centre of Stalybridge to become completely transformed with the formation of Armentieres Square with the canal running through. The first official boat through Stalybridge on May 1st was skippered by me, it was a big day for everyone. Following the opening, when there is any type of festival in Stalybridge we would bring through the trip boats for the public. '
