'As a young adult in 1970 the Hyde Civic Society were interested in cleaning the canals and had a working weekend which I joined and it was a very muddy operation, 20 of us pulling out all kinds of rubbish from the canal, a token clean-up of one section. Two years later canal mania started to spread throughout the country, I became part of Operation Ashtac in 1972, over 100 volunteers helped and the canal was drained. I have a picture of me standing in the canal in two feet of mud and silt, but it was great fun. We moved and cleared a huge amount along 2-3 miles of canal in one day. The publicity helped other canal societies.'
