'I’ve always lived in Tameside, my interest in canals began way back in 1956 when I was 10 years old and my father and his mate started to build a cabin cruiser, so I used to hold all the timbers whilst they screwed them in place. Then the big day came and we launched the boat in the canal in Hyde which was just about navigable in those days, then sailed it through the locks up to Marple. Very soon after that the canal in Hyde and Stalybridge were declared closed as the locks had fallen in to disrepair and were full of old prams and bicycles and all sorts…..'
